Having beat the game long before we had all of the currently released Skylanders, I'm finding there are several characters that I haven't really tried out in story mode. Furthermore, my son bought Stealth Elf with his own money and therefore was really the only one to play her while we were beating the game.
When we started out with her, we picked the right path (Pook Blade Saint) but recently wanted to try out Forest Ninja instead. Not so great. So I've been playing Stealth Elf to switch her back to the PBS path... and man is she fun to play!!! She's insanely fast flipping through levels and just deals crazy amounts of damage when she's fully upgraded.
We also had the same experience with Ghost Roaster. We started with his Skull Master, but I thought Fear Eater might be a little better for PvP since it helps increase his ectoplasm mode. Either way I don't think he has a great PvP build, but switching him back to Skull Master was also a blast. Watching his head keep chomping on baddies while he's in skull mode has yet to get old. In fact, it even helped me to tune out his cackle, which I found to be quite annoying in the past.
If only skull charge wasn't limited to one hit per run, he would be a lot stronger in PvP.
What about you guys? What Skylanders have you had the most fun playing?

When I just want to sit back, have fun, and leave destruction in my wake, my go-to choices are Stealth Elf, Terrafin, and Ignitor. I have more fun with close-range or unique attackers than ranged ones; there's no substitute for getting up close and personal!
I picked out Stealth Elf before we even got the game--I always go Thief/Rogue/Ninja, and she seemed to be a combination of all three. I was pleasantly surprised to find out she was actually broken in-game, but I would've used her either way.
Terrafin caught me by surprise, but the second he serenaded us with an off-key rendition of the Jaws theme, I was hooked forever. Again, I'm pleased to note that he defied my wildest expectations, and earned his place as a perennial favorite by blazing through even the toughest Trophies with no effort to speak of. I can't imagine how long the shark-dodging challenge in particular would've taken without Terrafin.
Ignitor is a recent entry for me. He was a tough sell at first, but once I switched him to Soul of the Flame, every time out became a blast--literally! I was taken aback by how good a character he had become; I had all but disregarded him prior to the switch, but ever since, he's been a favorite.
I love the way Voodood plays, and ability-wise, he's better and more fun than the vast majority of Skylanders... but I just can't dig the aesthetic. He seems too generic, and as great as he is, I wish he were worse. Then I'd be able to ignore him! As it stands, though, Voodood is a blast, and a dark horse for me.

I didn't realize Terrafin was humming the Jaws theme until I read it in your post. That's fantastic! Just makes me love the guy even more!!

He wasn't my favorite initially, not even in my Top 10, but Bash grew on me and is now my favorite Skylander. His playstyle matches mine, as I am a in-your-face-type often in games, but having a quick escape ability is often key. Bash covers this beautifully, and his aesthetic brings out my inner dinosaur enthusiast. As well, his noises are adorable, and his back story makes me think of him as a hopeless romantic who dreams of flying, but due to his limitations, he made due with what he had and made something that matched him more (the rolling). I'm not a big fan of his Granite Dragon path, as I hardly used his Stone Projection ability and I disliked the charging up of his Tail Swipe attack. I ended up resetting him and I found that his Pulver Dragon path fits my style more comfortably. So, that is the short version of why I love Bash

Double Trouble and his noises reminds me of the noises my wife makes when she gets frustrated, so he is near and dear to my heart.
I love Terrafin because of the Jaws humming, but I really like the nimble characters. He and Bash hit a ton.
Flameslinger really captures the deadly at range characteristic and also is very fast and punishes those who try to keep up. I also love the display of power he has with the flame circle.
I guess if we are just talking gameplay, it would be Flameslinger.

When I started the game, my first character was Bash. Liked the way he looks, plus Earth is my favorite element.
It turned out to be a great character, who can perform well at any part of the game. He allows me to play creatively, using whatever tactic I want on the fly...he's great!

A friend of mine has an armless Hex. Those smaller pieces aren't meant to handle too much wear and tear. Right now my Zap only has one horn... he lost the other one falling from a great height. He probably got spoiled in the game where it's impossible to fall off ledges...

Haha that in itself is an interesting idea. *Zap sliding around* Spyro: Zap, I don't think you should be doing that so close to the ledge. You might fall off. Zap: HA! Falling off ledges, whoever thought of such lunacy? *falls*
