(Still need a cool name for these tiers!)
My 10 y/o son and I played a mid tier tournament today on Cyclops Square with no powerups. We had some disagreements on which characters belonged there, but this is who we played and how it turned out:
ROUND ONE
Dark Spyro (Sheep Burner) beat Spyro (Blitz)
I really thought the blitz Spyro would win, but it didn't turn out that way. The charge attack kept getting interrupted by flames, and it ended up feeling like Chop Chop's shield to me. The elevations also caused problems, as Dark Spyro was able to use bounce pads to his advantage, often firing from the air.
Sonic Boom (Siren Griffen) beat Voodood (Marauder)
Once again, this did not turn out how I expected. Voodood started out strong, but once SB committed herself to a head first roar assault, Voodood had a lot of trouble getting back into melee range. These first two loses were by me.
Eruptor (Volcanor) beat Double Trouble (Conjuror)
This was our first DT battle and it really showed. This match wasn't even close. DT started out going for distance attacks with his doubles, but they kept getting picked off by eruptions. Very few could hit their target. In the meantime, as Eruptor got closer, DT tried to switch to Eldritch Beam but it was very inconsistent in locking on Eruptor. Lots of frustration for the DT player (which wasn't me this time.)
Ignitor (Blademaster) beat Whirlwind (Tempest Dragon)
I know Tash and V like Soul of the Flame better, but my son is a bigger fan of Blademaster so we're still using it. As with the above battle, this wasn't even close. Whirlwind simply had nowhere to hide - if she stayed away the flame form came after her and if she came close she got annihilated by the sword. Type mismatch pretty much doomed this from the start.
Prism Break (Crystaleer) beat Wrecking Ball (Ultimate Spinner)
Even though I think PB is very good, I just don't tend to play him very well. I was WB and thought I had a good shot at winning this. It was fairly close, but Wrecking Ball had a tough time maneuvering his force field attack and just couldn't pull out the win.
Gill Grunt (Water Weaver) beat Cynder (Nether Welder)
As with DT, this was our first Cynder battle and my son was playing with her. Gill Grunt really is a very strong PVP'er. One problem is that it seems that GG has just a SLIGHTLY longer reach with his water hose than Cynder's lightning. That made things tough on the female dragon. She tried switching to ghost attacks via shadow dash, but it just wasn't enough and Gill won pretty handily.
(Sonic Boom - Medea Griffin - watched this round as we had an odd number of participants. Any characters you would remove from this tier or add in that we missed?)
ROUND TWO - same paths for all above except for Sonic Boom
Gill Grunt beat Ignitor
The type advantage was simply too much here. Ignitor didn't have much of a chance, as Gill is both mobile and has two different ranged attacks.
Dark Spyro beat Sonic Boom (Medea Griffin)
In certain matchups, this Sonic Boom can do extremely well. However, this wasn't one of them. Dark Spyro's flames took out the babies with ease and simply chased Sonic Boom all around the arena. Without the roar upgrade path, SB just didn't have the firepower to match up here.
Eruptor beat Prism Break
Prism Break started out well, but once Eruptor was able to get within range it was pretty much over. PB just doesn't have the speed to get away in this matchup.
ROUND THREE
Dark Spyro beat Eruptor
Just as Prism Break couldn't get away from Eruptor in the previous match, here Eruptor wasn't fast enough to get close to Dark Spyro. Dark Spyro simply kept fleeing to high ground and blasting Eruptor while he tried to close the distance. A frustrating battle for the Eruptor player.
Gill Grunt beat Sonic Boom (Siren Griffen)
Gill Grunt opened a big lead, and eventually Sonic Boom started unleashing some serious roar damage... but it was too late. Overall Gill kept her at bay with his water hose and pulled out the win.
FINAL MATCH - Dark Spyro vs Gill Grunt
This was INCREDIBLY close! At the beginning, Gill was in a bit more of a defensive mode and was trying to get away from Dark Spyro, which just led to Gill taking damage. Eventually the match turned into a heavy weight boxing match, where Dark Spyro was backed into a corner and the two simply blasted back and forth. When the match ended, we weren't even sure who the winner was - but Gill Grunt pulled out the victory with 44 health remaining.
