Okay, I think I'm settling in on three tiers. I know we could probably break it down further, but there needs to be enough in each one that there are playable options.
In this particular topic, I don't want to debate who goes where. Rather, I would like some help in naming each tier. It would be cool to have Skylanders specific ideas, but I don't know what that might look like...
The kids and I were talking last night and we considered naming it after bad guys, such as the Chompie Division (bottom tier) and ... that's all I have without having the guide book in front of me.
We could go after NPC's, such as Flynn, Cali and Eon. I know there are Elder Elementals, I don't know if there are two other types of characters or classes that could be the middle and bottom tiers.
Thoughts?

I like the idea of using enemies, specifically Chompies, to name the tier. Green Chompies as bottom, Blue as middle, Red as top?

Here is another idea:
bottom: Chompie Division middle: Spell Punk Division top: Shadow Knight Division

Ooh, I like that. Using characters from the game to name the divisions is excellent.
I do propose that we add a fourth division, though; the Open Division. Every character allowed, no holds barred!

Open Division sounds good to me, and I agree with Chompie and Spell Punk, but something about Shadow Knight doesn't sit well with me. Sounds too 'evil' IMO But it is all opinion and personal choice anywho! Whatever floats your boat as I always say.

Okay, how about Chompies (bottom), Spell Punk (middle) and Kaos (top) ?
I was thinking about it, and the mid tier is the only one that will have all eight elements represented. Bottom has no Earth, top has no Magic. There are spell punks in all eight types, so they fit the broadest category. Chompies are obviously weaksauce, and Kaos is surprisingly tough to beat in game (given how weenie his personality is).
I am just about ready to dub these the titles of our tiers - does anyone object? Speak now, or forever hold your peace!

Um what are the tiers for? Is this for setting up PvP in your own house and limiting the selection of characters to make it more fair?

The tiers are for organizing competitive gameplay. Without question, you're free to battle any way you like. If you want to play with Drill Sergeant and don't mind me busting out Bash, then so be it! However, it's helpful for a gaming community to agree upon some standards that will help encourage fair player vs player matchups.
One of the helpful things about tiers is that it makes every character playable, at least in a certain environment. It was fun to have a tournament the other day with my son where only Chompy tier (the lowest) characters could participate. Ghost Roaster ended up winning. If the tournament was completely open, not only would Ghost Roaster not have won, he wouldn't have even been chosen.
And when a community can agree upon the tiers, it helps resolve individual disputes. I can insist on using my Bash against your Drill Sergeant, and you can declare all day that it's not fair. But who's to say? A group of experienced players who are trying to be as unbiased and fair as possible - that's who!
