It's entirely possible that I'll get around to tweaking the site and adding some Giants specific boards. In the meantime, I'm just going to start talking about the character I am playing at the moment: Crusher.
I decided to pick him up because I think he's the coolest looking Giant that has been released so far. Since I haven't played too much with regular Skylanders, I don't have enough of a barometer to measure his power against.
So far he plays just like a giant golem probably should: he hits hard and moves very slowly. However, the slow movement really is a liability when it comes to his attacks. He has to swing the hammer up over his head and usually takes damage in the process. Quicker bad guys are giving me trouble with him.
Because he moves so slowly, I try not to stand still and be an even easier target. This makes his eye-beam (which temporarily freezes enemies) seem less useful, since you stand still while firing it.
I'm at a cross roads right now on which of his paths to take. Initially I thought all new characters would have the option to switch back and forth between paths, but now I'm reading that's not actually the case. If so, I suppose I will end up trying both paths anyway...
Therefore I'd like to start with the path that will likely end up being weaker, so my switch to the other will be permanent. That leaves me stuck wondering which is better. I use the hammer attack almost exclusively, so it makes sense to go that route. On the other hand, the exploding rocks look very interesting.
I can't decide. Thoughts?

I upgraded Crusher on the Hammer path -very poor choice I think, planning on resetting him. Although the hammer does become considerably stronger, he is just too slow to attack and takes to much damage when standing toe to toe.

I was working through the first set of Brock's challenges (haven't unlocked the next round yet) and the last one required Crusher to defeat all enemies without taking a hit. I really expected it to be tough, but I got it on the first try.
I think the main thing with Crusher is that you want to just come in mashing the A button like crazy but that, as you mentioned, leaves him very vulnerable to taking damage. However, if you are more selective with your attacks, taking time to recognize the strategy of the enemy you are facing, it's relatively easy to avoid them and then go to town with the hammer.
I decided to try the hammer path first, so I'm still saving up money to finish it off. The other path looks more fun to me and ties in better with his soul gem. I got so used to being able to fully upgrade a character in about half an hour on the last level of SSA that this grueling quest for more gold is taking its toll.
