Skylanders Armory RPG FAQ!
Beginners, this is for you!
Q: What is “RPing?”
A: RPing is an abbreviation for Role Playing. Role Playing is the process of adapting the persona of a fictional character, and is really what this RPG is all about. In the Skylanders Armory RPG case, RPing refers to writing about the adventures of the pre-established Skylanders. You RP the story of these characters through your In Character (IC) posts. Someone who Role Plays (RP’s) is an RPer.
Q: What is a text-based RPG?
A: The difference between a text-based RPG (what we have here) and the kind of RPG found in video games is that the text-based RPG relies on text. Words are your controls, sentences your actions. Everything that your character does, says, thinks, and feels is described through your writing. It’s like writing a little bit of a narrative every time you post. You are playing the part of your character by writing about them.
The game part of The SARPG comes from interaction with other people’s characters. What your character does is reliant upon what others’ characters do – it’s like a big, group story, where each person contributes a post’s-worth of writing. You interact with people through posting back and forth.
Q: Can anyone play?
A: Absolutely! The SARPG is an open game – you can join without approval. Anybody and everybody are allowed to contribute and play. Your characters and your ideas are welcomed. All you need are a keyboard and some writing drive. However, you must play as a pre-existing Skylander. So if you wanted to play as Voodood, check to make sure that someone else isn’t already playing as Voodood. As far as we know, there are no clones in Skylands.
Q: Can you write anything?
A: Not exactly. While there is a huge amount of freedom in the RPG, there are certain limits to the kinds of things you can do IC. Otherwise, people could have “god-like” powers, enabling them to play unfairly; we refer to this as “god-modding”, or “GMing”, and when someone does it, it takes away from the fun of other players. There are rules to prevent foul play and make sure everyone has a good time.
Q: Who runs the SARPG?
A: The SARPG is run by myself, Radical Tropicon. I will be in charge of running a number of functions, including running the official plot lines, answering questions, and settling disputes. I will also be in charge of dealing consequences (both positive and negative) to those who have earned them. In time, there may be other members elected to help run the SARPG, but for now it is just me. I am very open-minded and I would be very glad to hear any complaints or grievances or suggestions you may have, so just fire a private message my way if you do!
Q: Where do I start?
A: When you want to join the SARPG, the first thing to do is choose the Skylander you will play as. Once you’ve chosen, you make a post in the Character Selection thread, which is in the Rules and Character Profile board, stating which character you want to play as. I will update this as soon as I am able, and remember: first come, first serve!
Once you are recognized as the player of your chosen Skylander, I will fire a private message at you that will say you can start playing as that character. At this point, hop right on into the story!
Q: How Do I Play?
A: If you’ve gotten this far, you know what this forum is, how it works, several terms, and where to start. But how do you play? As I’ve said, the gameplay is done through text and writing; a back-and-forth of posts describing the actions of your characters. Here’s an example SARPG post interaction:
IC: Ignitor dodged the Rain of Skulls spell with a swift roll. Immediately, he sprung up onto his feet and ran at the Undead Skylander, his sword ready to strike. When he was within 6 feet of Hex, he swung his sword at her...
IC: Hex was one to often keep her cool, but when she saw Ignitor easily dodge her spell, she couldn’t help but feel a small tinge of frustration build within her.
“Relax,” She sighed. “You can easily defeat this hothead.” Luckily, she had seen Ignitor’s charge in her direction. As he swung at her, she summoned a phantom orb, aiming it at her fiery opponent...
OOC: I dare you to dodge it
OOC: Haha I doubt I can!
IC: A swing and a miss. Ignitor was struck by the orb, sending him flying backwards a few more metres. Dazed, he slowly got up with the help of his sword.
“You will pay for that...” He groaned as he readied his sword for the next phase of battle.
IC: Hex remained still and readied for whatever unpredictable attack the cursed knight would unleash next.
“Why do you wish to defeat me? I cannot recall ever harming you, Ignitor!”
IC: Hex’s supposed ignorance only infuriated Ignitor more.
“You cursed me into this state, witch! I only wish to seek vengeance!”
IC: “So just because I am a witch, you think that I was the one who cursed you?” Hex replied. “I am sorry Ignitor, but that is an unfair assumption.”
I hope you get the idea of how gameplay works via this small example. Note how both Hex’s and Ignitor’s “players” left each other opportunities to dodge or parry the other’s attacks, rather than auto-hitting, or scoring blows without letting the other player respond. Also that, when dealt a blow which wouldn’t be avoidable, Ignitor’s player was reasonable, and let Ignitor be injured – this is the right thing to do as a player. When the players had things to say which weren’t said by their characters, they used “OOC”.
Q: What if someone is playing unfairly?
A: If you feel someone is god-modding or being unrealistic, send them a PM and discuss your concern in a polite manner. If they do not cooperate and you still feel that person was playing unfairly, PM myself or another staff member and we will make a final call. Please do not call the god-modder out in the threads or in a post.
Q: What if I'm accused of playing unfairly?
A: Read over your post and read all the posts that pertain to the situation you're in. Consider the rules and make a logical decision about whether your post is unfair or not. Also read up on the other player's character to know their capabilities, and see if they are playing fairly as well. If you really think your post is legitimate (or if you're not sure), send it to me to be safe. I will let you know what’s up!
