So far it seems that the mace path (Captain Crustacean) is quite a bit stronger than the star shooting path (Commander Crab). (Which is a higher rank, Captain or Commander?)
As far as ranged attackers go, the Commander Crab isn't all that bad. The big problem is that he has no speed move, and therefore he has no way to get away from melee attackers. When they get in range he does have better close attacks than just about any other ranged attacker... perhaps only Drobot (from the ranged family) does better in close quarters due to his afterburners.
While it's nice to charge up the three stars, it's quicker and more effective to simply spam the fire button and shoot three bursts of three stars each. The homing can get flubbed up and the range is only about half of the screen, so there are definite limitations there.
On the other hand, Captain Crustacean can really deal out the pain. His upgraded Poseidon strike hits directly in front of him for 50 damage and also sends out a couple of Prism Break-esque shards that also do 50 damage. Like a lot of other melee attackers, he gets some combos that are slightly difficult to pull off but do good damage. And they're a nice change from just spamming the A button.
On both builds he gets a really nice armor upgrade, and once his HC's are done he can max out at 100 speed. Since we just got him yesterday we haven't done those yet, but that will definitely be a benefit to him.
Also a plus is the max 600 health, which puts him in the upper echelon in that department.
For those of you that have been able to snag a Wham-Shell, please chime in with your thoughts on this Water Skylander!
(And by the way, all of these comments are in regards to his game play on the Wii.)

Somehow I figured Captain Crustacean would wind up being the better path.
I have him coming in the mail, so hopefully I can test him out sometime in the first week of May!

I bought him from eBay. I was willing to spend more than retail for him.

Excellent video! I really liked the analysis of both paths and their damage numbers, as well as having one final battle at the end. I hope to see more of these in the future!

How did you guys find him? I'm down to 3 to get... Sigh... I got mine at gamestop.com. They have him in stock at random times... there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. I just kept him in my wish list and checked it multiple times a day. When it was there, I snatched it up!

Hmm....
For your rank question, "Commander" is a title, "Captain" is a rank. If he was an Army type, Captain is a fairly low officer rank, but in the Navy it's a fairly high officer rank (equivalent to the Army's Colonel). Most Commander's will at least be a Lt Colonel or a Colonel, so it comes out as being about even.
The difference is, a Captain is more likely to get in and mix it up with his troops in a fight (army version), whereas a Commander's job is to organize things from afar. Which actually fits the upgrade names, amusingly.
As for his utility... yeah, the Mace path is rather plainly superior. Which is saddening, as Water gets another heavy-melee toon with almost useless ranged attacks (Hi, Slam Bam!). I don't exactly see this guy as being in the top-tier mostly due to the lack of a reliable speed move, but it's good to see he's going to mop the floor with the things in melee or just beyond. The high base speed is nice but unhelpful. His high HP and armor are both a really good combo, but I'm still thinking Slam gets my vote for better brawler, simply because he can close distance faster. The Poseidon Strike is an interesting touch, so testing will have to commence....
...when and if I ever get one.
His stars really need unlimited range and mild homing as a basic upgrade, prior to spec.

An update on Wham-Shell: In the video, we weren't quite sure if the charged up Commander Crab (star shooting path) only hit once for 21 damage or if it could hit three times for 63. Upon further review, it does hit three times. In the video, one hit misses and one gets blocked by armor.
We did a lot of play testing today on Lightning Rod (and our recording kept getting interrupted!) and in the process we came up with another knock on Commander Crab. While charging up that big ranged attack, you can't move. I think that's a huge liability for Wham-Shell. Since it's only a mid-range attack, the charge time makes it very easy for your opponent to get out of range, especially if they have any kind of speed move. It renders that attack almost useless and just leaves him spamming his weaker shots.
Being allowed to walk while charging the star shooter would have been a big plus. Oh well, he's still a solid character.

Him being a Crab and being compared to the Navy is why I found it appropriate, yes. ;D
---
It would be a big plus if he could move and charge it, but it wouldn't stop him from still being really low on the list with that spec. It's nice that he can hit with all three, but like you say, it's darn near useless since you have to stand there.
Really, really sad. Fortunately, his Mace path is much better, but that's still disheartening considering we have a solid melee bruiser in Water already.
