Someone on another forum gave me the idea to take my second set of Skylanders and customize them. I decided to do just that, and I repainted a few of them. They looked okay, but it wasn't until later that I discovered the customizing that I like comes in the form of accessories rather than palette swaps. So I got creative, and I've come up with these.
Stealth Elf's clothes are made from Polly Pocket clothing. The skirt was originally part of a bigger dress, but I only needed the skirt part, so I used scissors and cut it up. The nurse hat was actually made from a pair of white shorts from a Polly Pocket figure, and I just used a red sharpie to add the cross. An unintentional bonus about this outfit for Stealth Elf is that her ninja mask looks like a surgical mask. I didn't intend that when making the outfit. XD
I'm trying to make Slam Bam look like a generic villain from a generic spy film. The gun came from a Halo Reach figure, and unlike most of the customizations where I had to super glue parts to the figure, the gun actually snaps right into place with Slam Bam's hand as if it were made for him. The bow-tie came from the same dress as Stealth Elf's skirt, and as for the monocle, do you know those types of pills that come in sheets? Ones that are in little plastic bubbles, and you have to poke the pill out of them? That's what the monocle is. I was lucky that we had a type of pill in the house with small enough bubbles for the monocle. I eventually hope to add some sort of villainous hat, and find a small white cat figure to wrap around his arm. XD
This is probably my most elaborate one. The hair came from a Princess Jasmine figure, and you have NO IDEA how hard it was to separate the hair from that toy. I spent a really long time on it, but it paid off as it looks great on Hex. The pink dress is from a Princess Ariel figure, (the same line of toys as the Jasmine one) and what you probably wouldn't know unless I told you is that I actually had to cut the dress a bit shorter, as it was originally too long for the figure. (It went below the base) The little purple rope around the waist is actually from a pair of binoculars which was a Polly Pocket accessory, and the earrings were from a cheap necklace I bought at a thrift shop.
The extra armour on Drill Sergeant here is all cheap jewelry I bought at a thrift shop, and I spent about 5 bucks for the lot. The cross (or an X as it is on Drill Sergeant) is actually from the same necklace I used for Hex's earrings. the arm plates were something I spotted at the thrift store, and even though I didn't know exactly how I was going to attach them, I knew I had to buy them seeing as how they were the perfect size and colour scheme for him. The "drills" on his wheels were from a pair of earrings that I took apart to get the little springs.
Not much to say here. Just added a Pokeball to Double Trouble's hand, because it is pretty much EXACTLY the way characters in the Pokemon show hold out a Pokeball. I felt it would fit well. The Pokeball (or Great Ball to be more specific) is from a Nintendo DS stylus I imported from Japan which has a little Croagunk keychain on it.
Stump Smash with a head of leafy hair. The leaves came from this weird Pokemon toy I bought a while back. It's a Snivy figure, but it sits on this elaborate grass themed throne that launches discs. I snipped some leaves off of that and used them for hair.
Whirlwind's scarf is actually a ribbon from a Sailor Moon figure. the ribbon was a loose part that wrapped around her arm, and I honestly never saw the point in it. Whatever its original purpose was, it makes a perfect scarf for whirlwind, and just like the gun for Slam Bam, it actually fits nice and snug around Whirlwind so I don't have to super glue it on.
And lastly we have double axe Voodood. in all honesty, I don't know what the axe is from. I bought a bag of assorted toys at the thrift shop in order to get this awesome Blue Beetle figure, and among the other toys was this random axe. It looked similar to Voodood's axe anyways, so I figure he might as well have it.
And those are the customs I've done so far. It's been a lot of fun, and I've enjoyed how it has let me be creative. While I initially said that I was customizing my second set of characters, that's only true for the customs that were palette swaps. I actually gave my entire second set of figures to my best friend who had gotten Skylanders for her birthday, and couldn't find any figures in stores. So these customs you're seeing are on my only set of these characters. While it may sound crazy that I'm vandalizing my only set of these guys, I actually prefer these customized versions over the original versions. It makes them unique, and it makes it feel like you have slightly different characters than everyone else's Skylanders.
Thanks for reading, and if you've made any customized Skylanders, make sure to post them here too.
